We Have Empowered Youth as Changemakers for a Sustainable Future: Insights from the ProVeg Food Innovation Challenge Impact Survey

ProVeg has been hosting the Food Innovation Challenge (FIC) for six years, engaging over 5,000 students in the innovation competition during this time. To evaluate the Challenge’s impact on participants, we conducted a follow-up survey with past students in China. The findings reveal that the FIC is far more than a competition—it strengthens professional competencies, shapes career trajectories, and fosters sustainable lifestyle practices.

According to the survey, 75% of alumni have aligned their academic research with sustainable food systems, and over 55% of those already in the workforce have secured roles in sustainability-related fields. Beyond influencing career trajectories, the FIC has strengthened their career readiness by bridging the gap between academic learning and real-world application. Participants reported notable improvements in teamwork, technical, and commercialization skills, alongside a deeper understanding of sustainable food systems.

Agreement on FIC’s Enhancement of Professional Knowledge and Skills in Sustainable Food

Leveraging these skills and knowledge gains, the FIC has actively encouraged greater student engagement in sustainable food studies and career development, demonstrating its impact in cultivating talent for the sector.

Agreement on the FIC’s Positive Influence on Academic and Career Pathways in the Sustainable Sector

The impact of the FIC has also rippled through the personal and social lives of its participants, triggering shifts in dietary behavior. More than 90% reported a willingness to adopt sustainable diets and recommend them to family, friends, and peers.

Willingness to Adopt and Recommend Sustainable Food Consumption Behaviors

We are proud to see that Food Innovation Challenge (FIC) has delivered a multifaceted impact that extends beyond the classroom. By strengthening professional skills, shaping career pathways, and fostering sustainable lifestyle practices, ProVeg China has cultivated a mission-aligned talent pipeline poised to drive innovation, resilience, and long-term transformation across the sustainable food ecosystem.
