Most recently, the 2026 Neo-Protein Industry Ecosystem Development Conference was held in Wuxi, China. Co-hosted by the Wuxi Municipal Government and the Institutes for Biomanufacturing Innovation (Wuxi) of the State Development and Investment Corporation (SDIC), the event brought together representatives from government, academia, industry, investment, and NGOs to discuss the development of China’s neo-protein sector.
Against this backdrop, the conference also served as a platform for Wuxi to share its policy directions and strategic initiatives supporting the neo-protein industry, while facilitating exchanges on emerging trends, opportunities and challenges in the sector. In their opening remarks, Vice Mayor Zhou Wendong and Wuxi High-Tech Zone Party Secretary Cui Rongguo highlighted the city’s commitment to developing biopharmaceuticals and biotechnology as strategic pillar industries, emphasizing support for collaborative innovation, frontier technologies, and the attraction of high-quality projects, leading enterprises, and advanced platforms. Cui further stressed the city’s dedication to providing strong services and safeguards for enterprises and research institutions in the neo-protein sector.
Academician Chen Jian, Professor at Jiangnan University and Chair of the Neo-Protein Professional Committee of the Chinese Institute of Food Science and Technology (CIFST), delivered the keynote “Neo-Protein: Strategic Tasks and Scientific Opportunities in Biomanufacturing,” outlining the scientific framework, strategic significance, and development pathways of neo-protein. He highlighted neo-protein as a key direction for transforming protein production, enhancing food security, and advancing sustainable development.
ProVeg China was pleased to be invited to participate in the roundtable at the conference, which brought together a range of perspectives on the development of the neo-protein sector. Nicole Wu, Executive Director of ProVeg China, contributed insights based on ProVeg’s global and local experience in advancing sustainable food systems and supporting the protein transition, and also shared perspectives on key opportunities and challenges facing the field.

The neo-protein sector is increasingly shifting from a framing centered on national food security and systemic sustainability toward the creation of tangible, relatable value for individual consumers. Greater emphasis is placed on addressing real unmet needs through safe, accessible, and meaningful product applications, rather than relying primarily on abstract or system-level narratives.
• Safety, functionality and palatability as foundational requirements for scale
Regulatory clarity and product safety remain essential preconditions for industry scaling. This is accompanied by a growing focus on systematic risk assessment and supportive policy frameworks, including post-approval monitoring mechanisms to reduce regulatory uncertainty. Three core product requirements are widely recognized: safety as the baseline, demonstrable functionality, and critically, good taste and palatability to support sustained consumer acceptance.
• Coordinated ecosystem development across the full value chain
Using China’s electric vehicle industry as a reference, breakthrough sector growth depends on synchronized progress across policy support, enterprise innovation, core technology advancement, infrastructure development, and consumer market cultivation. The long-term development of the neo-protein sector similarly relies on the formation of a coordinated, multi-stakeholder ecosystem spanning government, industry, academia, and downstream applications.
The conference also officially launched the 2026 China Neo-Protein Innovation Development Index (Wuxi Index), providing a comprehensive view of industrial clustering, policy support, technological innovation, and capital catalysis, further consolidating Wuxi and SDIC’s leading roles in advancing China’s neo-protein industry.
Overall, the event highlighted Wuxi’s strategic role in supporting neo-protein development and reinforced the collaborative efforts of government, industry, academia, and NGOs to foster a high-quality, sustainable, and innovative protein ecosystem in China.
