Saving Our Planet, One Plant-Rich School Lunch at a Time
ProVeg UK’s School Plates programme has been longlisted for the world’s biggest environmental award, the prestigious Food Planet Prize. The winning initiative will receive $2 million to help grow their programme.
Of around 1000 nominations, ProVeg is one of 39 initiatives longlisted alongside organisations from 23 countries across the globe.
Commended for lowering the greenhouse gas emissions of the food system by shifting towards plant-based alternatives in schools, the School Plates programme has proven to be incredibly impactful. Over 47 million meals have been transitioned to plant-rich alternatives since 2018. The chosen initiative will be announced in March.
Jimmy Pierson, Director of ProVeg UK, said, “We are beyond delighted that our School Plates programme has been long-listed for the world’s biggest environmental award, the Food Planet Prize 2025, for initiatives that are reshaping the food system.
We’ve been recognised for our contribution to making school food in the UK more planet-friendly. This is a huge credit to all of the amazing school caterers that we’ve worked with over the years, and to the drive and passion of our incredible School Plates team.”
More about the Food Planet Prize
In what it calls the greatest challenge of our time, the The Curt Bergfors Food Planet Prize intends to transform the world’s food system: “we must change course now and start reshaping the food system towards one that can support a well-nourished world population on a thriving planet.”
The Curt Bergfors Foundation was established on August 30th, 2019, in acknowledgment of the perils that our current food systems pose to the health of people and the planet.
The Food Planet Prize is unlike many awards as it prioritises projects with abundant growth potential, looking to reward those who will succeed, not those who have.
Of around 1000 nominations placed every year, the list is shortened to 400 nominees, and then the longlist, where ProVeg UK has gained a spot, lists just 39 entries. The winning prize is $2 million dollars.
