How to make ethical vegan chocolate choices

World Chocolate Day, 7 July, is our opportunity to celebrate the availability of vegan chocolate in South Africa. During this mini-campaign we are sharing how to make ethical chocolate choices, a decadent vegan chocolate brownie recipe as well as a giveaway you would not want to miss!

“I eat chocolate everyday.”

That’s a statement that may draw quite a few side glances but what if we tell that Chocolate is in fact good for you and the benefits of a square a day are worth biting into. Dark Chocolate is packed with nutrients and antioxidants that have been shown to promote weight loss, heart health and cancer prevention. Cacao, the base ingredient in chocolate, packs more antioxidants per ounce than green tea or red wine! Dark chocolates with 70% cacao and higher tend to have lower levels of unhealthy fats and added sugar.

The vegan chocolate market is growing

For many transitioning to a plant based diet, finding a good replacement for your favourite chocolate snack can be a challenge. Thankfully, the growth of the plant-based market has opened up the space for both local and international producers. Vegan chocolate offerings in South Africa include multiple flavours in both sugared and sugar free variants.

Making the ethical vegan chocolate choice

As important as it is for chocolate to taste good and be nutritious, alao important is that the chocolate is ethically sourced and doesn’t compromise the Human Rights, Climate, Forest or livelihoods of the source region. Historically, cocoa farming contributed to both environmental and socioeconomic injustices however the introduction of certifications such as UTZ, Fairtrade and Rainforest Alliance has worked to promote the interests of cocoa farming populations. When choosing chocolate that is produced within UTZ, Rainforest Alliance and Fairtrade guidelines , you’re making the responsible choice by choosing to enjoy chocolate that encourages the preservation of forests, livelihoods of cocoa farmers, climate restoration and human rights. So go ahead and nibble on a bar chocolatey goodness that’s as good for the environment as it is for you!
