Food Policy
We work with policymakers to keep food policies aligned with current evidence on health, climate impact, and food system resilience. This includes making submissions to consultations on Australia’s Dietary Guidelines, where we work to see plant-rich diets reflected in national recommendations. By engaging with government processes and providing evidence-based input, we support policies that make healthier, planet-friendly food choices easier for all Australians.

Australia’s Dietary Guidelines are being revised for the first time in over a decade, and we’re working to make sure plant-forward diets are front and centre through the consultation process.
To back our case with hard evidence, we commissioned a first of its kind model to show what happens when Australians shift toward plant-based diets. Built using Australian data, it quantifies the health, environmental, and economic impacts in concrete terms: years of healthy life saved, healthcare costs avoided, emissions cut, and household food bills lowered.
The full report will be released soon, and we’re already putting its findings to work. We’ll be taking this evidence into federal parliament, meeting with policymakers and advisors ahead of the public consultation, and preparing a formal submission. It’s a once-in-a-decade chance to change how a nation eats, and we don’t intend to waste it.
Impact
Your support is helping build something that outlasts a single review cycle. Our formal submissions, backed by independent research and dedicated Australian scenario modelling, give the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) a stronger evidence base for including plant-based recommendations in the updated guidelines. This groundwork means ProVeg Australia can move quickly and speak with authority at each review cycle, turning a single submission into a lasting seat at the table.
