Meatless May 2021

Meatless May 2021 Campaign Highlights

Meatless May is an awesome opportunity for individuals to try more plant-based food options. Choosing to follow a plant-based diet is more accessible than it has ever been in South Africa. Grabbing a plant-based patty or sausage on your way to a braai is now possible for most of us, and that is something worth celebrating!

Meatless May celebrates Meat Replacements in South Africa

During #MeatlessMay 2021, we chose to dish out everything we know about meat replacements! We assume that consumers are naturally curious about these new food options that mimic the taste and texture of meat, yet are made entirely from plant-based ingredients. You can find meat replacements available at markets, fish replacements in sushi, and plant-based burger patties on the menu at your local hang-out. The options are growing – and fast. Luckily, ProVeg South Africa loves to eat and taste food, so we sat down as a team and shared our personal favourite tried-and-tasted options across 8 different categories. Check out your go-to options for fish, chicken and beef replacements, biltong, boerewors and more!  Remember when we tasted every plant milk available in South Africa during World Plant Milk Day?! Plant-based food innovation drives the availability of products that offer a mind-blowing taste experience. The most common plant sources that are used in the creation of these products include soya protein, pea protein and seitan. Discover more about the versatility and benefits of common high protein plant sources used for meat replacements in this blog With all new food options, it is wise to question how consumption will affect your health. Get the scoop on meat replacements from our local Green Dietitian, Jessica Kotlowitz.

Putting products to the taste!

Here at ProVeg, we believe that one of the best ways to advocate for a plant-based diet is to share an epic taste experience – so that individuals can appreciate that this lifestyle does not compromise on deliciousness. We reached out to our favourite brands behind-the-scenes of these revolutionary products and received sponsorships from Fry Family Food Co., Herbivore, On The Greenside and many more!We used these products wisely and prepared a giveaway, where any Instagrammer across South Africa could enter to win a grand meat replacement hamper for themselves. We know that this giveaway is too much for one person, so we always hope that our lucky winners will share with their family and friends. Congrats @saretha_loves_food_!Once again, we took to social media and engaged with our awesome community by sending out ten jam-packed #MeatlessMay goodie bags full of sponsored products. This ranged from ribs to boerewors, patties and mince, even biltong! As always, we included educational cards about why we feel it is important to raise awareness about the availability of these plant-based products in our country. Scrolling through stories, receiving feedback and seeing how our Instagrammers prepare their treats are some of our favourite moments during a campaign.[vc_single_image image=”8333″ img_size=”full”]

The biggest youth show in Southern Africa celebrates #MeatlessMay

In efforts to share our Meatless May message with a wider audience, we appeared on Cape Town TV for the very first time. Cape Town TV streams Ek Se Live, the largest youth show in Southern Africa. We were invited to share our campaign during their environmental segment over three consecutive weeks. The crew was so excited to taste meat replacements live on television, where the audience was able to witness their first impressions. They were absolutely blown away by the plant-based taste experience, and we returned at the end of the month to prepare lunch for the entire cast and crew to enjoy. Read details of each episode in our blog.

Always a feast when ProVeg prepares the food

We ended the Meatless May 2021 campaign with an intimate luncheon amidst the winelands, just outside of Cape Town. We used the remainder of our sponsored food to prepare nothing short of a feast for our guests, who ranged from vegan influencers to plant-based food service specialists. It was so fun for us to work with the growing meat replacement community and celebrate their food innovation that makes it easier for us to choose healthy and delicious food that is good for all humans, animals and the planet.
