World Plant Milk Day

Proudly South African: ButtaNutt’s New Range of Plant Milk

Many brands claim local production, while in reality, they are sourcing their ingredients from outside of South African borders. On the other hand, ButtaNutt is a truly local brand at heart. As a proudly South African nut butter producer, they started out handcrafting a series of authentic tree nut spreads using local & natural ingredients. With much anticipation from consumers, ButtaNutt has now launched a new range of plant milks just in time for World Plant Milk Day 2020.

ButtaNutt’s new range of Plant Milk

You have the luxury of choosing between Almond Milk, Macadamia Milk, and certified gluten-free Oat Milk.

ButtaNutt Almond Milk

Ahead of World Plant Milk Day, ProVeg SA received some of the Almond Milk. With packaging that stands out from the rest, it was love at first sight.

“We could never understand why most almond milks only contain around 2% of almonds until we started making our own. We started off with 5% in our first trials and the milks were so thick, they were undrinkable. After many trials, we found that 3% produces the perfect consistency.”

ButtaNutt Macadamia Milk

Antonie van Heerden, founder of ButtaNutt, spent school holidays harvesting macadamia nuts on his parents farm on the banks of Sabie River. This experience is what inspired him to start roasting, blending and selling the nuts over weekends during his final year of Mechanical Engineering at Stellenbosch University. South Africa is the largest producer of Macadamia nuts in the world, predominantly exporting to China. With the popularity of nut milk on the rise – ProVeg SA is happy to see a local brand celebrating plants that are cultivated in abundance on South African soil. All macadamia nuts found in the milks are sourced from Mpumalanga, while the almonds are sourced from Klein Karoo.

ButtaNutt Oat Milk

Oat milk contains more sugar than other plant milks (about 4%) and therefore tastes slightly sweet. However, sugar is a natural component of oats, so oat milk usually contains no added or processed sugar. Oats have a high content of dietary fibre, phytochemicals and antioxidants, and are a particularly healthy food. Studies show that regular consumption of oats can have a positive effect on gastrointestinal problems as well as being anticarcinogenic. Furthermore, several publications have attested to the cholesterol-lowering properties of food.  ButtaNutt uses certified gluten free oats, in a factory that also processes tree nuts. Their factory is free from all other allergens, including peanuts.

Why are there additives?

Dipotassium phosphate is a water soluble mineral salt and source of potassium. It’s main role is to control the pH of the milk, keep it stable and creamy. Calcium carbonate is a mineral compound added as a source of calcium to build and protect your bones. Canola oil in the Oat Milk matches the fat content and creamy richness of whole-milk. Canola Oil was chosen as a locally sourced, GMO-free oil that has a neutral flavour and is high in monounsaturated fat.
