ProVeg India is an initiative supported by ProVeg International as a knowledge partner in India. We work to support the transition to more resilient, sustainable, and equitable food systems by making plant-based foods and alternative proteins more accessible and affordable within key public food and institutional frameworks.

What we do
ProVeg India works to expand the role of plant-based options in India’s food system by supporting public institutions, market actors, and producers to adopt affordable, scalable approaches.
Our work focuses on three key areas:
Livelihood and Enterprise Development
We collaborate with research institutions, food technology innovators, farmer producer organisations to develop viable plant-based foods that can scale sustainably.
Public Food Systems and Institutional Engagement
We work with government departments, hospitals, school meal programmes, and other public food schemes to introduce affordable plant-based products into large-scale meal programmes.
Market Development
Through partnerships and pilot initiatives, we work with producers, manufacturers, and institutional buyers to improve market access for plant-based ingredients and products.
We collaborate with industry, producer groups, government, and research partners to explore ways to strengthen plant-based supply chains in India.

Why we do it
India’s food system faces multiple intersecting challenges from nutrition insecurity and climate vulnerability to income risk in animal-based sectors and dependence on external ingredient imports.
Plant-based food systems can help address some of these challenges by:
- Improving nutrition in public meal programmes

- Supporting local production and processing
- Contributing to a more resilient food system

ProVeg has offices in 14 countries across five continents and is active around the world. ProVeg has observer status with the UNFCCC, the IPCC, and the CBD, special consultative status with ECOSOC, and are accredited for UNEA.
