NeoProtein Program

What is NeoProtein

NeoProtein represents the next-generation evolution of alternative proteins. It is a strategic, technology-driven expansion of sustainable protein sources designed to complement conventional agriculture and secure the future of our global food system.

NeoProtein integrates four core pillars of innovation:

  • Next-Gen Plant-Based Proteins: Optimizing nutrition and functionality through molecular science.
  • Fermentation & Microbial Proteins: Leveraging microorganisms to create complex, bio-identical food components.
  • Cultivated (Cell-Based) Proteins: Growing genuine animal cells without the need for traditional farming.
  • Emerging Bio-Technologies: Pioneering new methods to enhance food security and resource efficiency.

As these technologies scale, NeoProtein is transitioning from a specialized alternative to the definitive backbone of a sustainable and resilient global food economy.

What We Do

By bringing together experts from academia, industry, and research institutions, the NeoProtein Program aims to build scientific consensus, identify technological priorities, and accelerate progress in critical areas of research and development.

Top 10 Technical Bottlenecks in NeoProtein Blue Paper

Developed by 48 experts across China, the “Top 10 Technical Bottlenecks in NeoProtein (2025)” Blue Paper provides a systematic overview of the major technical barriers currently limiting the development of NeoProtein.

It offers a structured reference for academia, industry, and policymakers, supporting more coordinated efforts to accelerate breakthroughs and translate scientific research into practical applications.

NeoProtein Center of Excellence

In early 2026, ProVeg China and Jiangnan University signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to jointly establish a NeoProtein Innovation Center of Excellence (CoE). This new platform will help advance scientific innovation in NeoProtein and strengthen collaboration between research institutions, industry, and the global protein innovation ecosystem.

The CoE will focus on four key areas:

  • NeoProtein scientific research and technological innovation
  • Industry–academia collaboration and technology transfer
  • Industry research and public awareness
  • Domestic and international exchange and collaboration

A central objective of the CoE is to drive scientific solutions for addressing the ‘Top Ten Technical Bottlenecks for NeoProtein by 2025.
