NeoProtein Project
What is NeoProtein
NeoProtein refers to next-generation protein sources developed to complement conventional animal agriculture and support a more sustainable food system. These include:
- Plant-based proteins
- Microbial and fermentation-derived proteins
- Cultivated (animal-cell) proteins
- Other emerging protein technologies
These innovations are rapidly advancing worldwide and are expected to play an increasingly important role in the future of food.
What We Do
By bringing together experts from academia, industry, and research institutions, the NeoProtein Project aims to build scientific consensus, identify technological priorities, and accelerate progress in critical areas of research and development.
Key Output
The Top 10 Technical Bottlenecks for NeoProtein 2025
The “Top 10 Technical Bottlenecks in NeoProtein (2025)” report was jointly developed by 48 leading Chinese experts from a wide range of fields, including plant-based proteins, microbial and fermentation technologies, insect and algae proteins, cultivated proteins, as well as regulatory and equipment-related areas.
The report identifies the most pressing technological challenges facing the NeoProtein sector and provides reference points for research priorities and industrial development.
