We’re excited to announce that ProVeg UK has just launched a brand new programme designed specifically for schools, teachers, and climate leaders.
This powerful educational initiative provides teachers with all the resources they need to engage pupils in meaningful conversations about what’s on their plates.
Since launching the School Plates programme in 2018, ProVeg UK has worked with over 7,000 schools and more than a third of local authorities, helping more than a million children to eat more plant-based meals.
Planet-friendly food choices
While we knew that we were making significant positive changes in the UK’s school canteens, we came to realise that there was a pressing need for resources that directly support children in understanding the importance of these changes to school menus. Educating children about the impact of their food choices is essential in nurturing future generations that are both healthy and environmentally conscious. Children today care about climate change more than any previous generation. According to a UNICEF report,, nine out of ten children are worried about climate change, with 89% of children saying they don’t feel enough is being done to tackle the climate crisis and 81% feeling that they are not being listened to. We wanted to help.
The programme
Which is where Canteen to Classroom comes in – a programme we’ve worked incredibly hard to develop. It provides teachers with the essential tools they need to help children learn about the food they eat: where it comes from, how it’s made, and its impact on both our health and the planet.
The lessons are ready-to-use, with high-quality, evidence-based lesson plans, as well as engaging presentations, tailored plans for all primary-school levels, and additional resources. Students will get to learn about tasty food, health, justice, animals, and the environment.
With a wide range of enjoyable and engaging content, there are plenty of lessons to choose from. These include discovering more about well-known athletes and how we can be healthy and strong following a plant-based diet, evaluating and debunking myths associated with the food system and what we put on our plates, and examining the impact of agriculture on nature, the planet, and its people.
Government sustainability goals
The Department for Education has set a target for all schools in England to implement a climate action plan by 2025. Our programme is designed to work in tandem with climate actions plans and help educational institutions to achieve their sustainability goals. In this way, we ensure that planning translates into action. Involving learners helps to inspire their enthusiasm for driving positive change and enables them to share their knowledge within their local communities.
We are looking forward to getting this programme up and running, and can’t wait to work with you. So please, dive in! Check out the webpage. Download the resources. Get involved.
