Lisa Gawthorne achieves victory in the Duathlon World Championships in Ibiza
Powered by a plant-based diet, athlete Lisa Gawthorne stormed into first place at this year’s grueling Duathlon World Championships, which took place on the Mediterranean island of Ibiza on 29 April.
Lisa took first place in the “Age Group” category – one of eight categories for the event – to be crowned World Age Group Champion, just six weeks after becoming European Age Group Champion in Italy.
The race was held in the Ibizan town of Santa Eulalia and involved a 4.8 km run, followed by 19 km on a bike and finishing with a 3 km run. Lisa completed the race in 1 hour, 5 minutes and 17 seconds, crossing the line 1 minute and 6 seconds ahead of the silver medallist.
“I am so happy. I really didn’t expect this one. It was amazing to become European Champion, but this is a dream of dreams to go one step further taking a world champion title in my age group amongst the best of the best in the world,” Lisa said.
Lisa, from Formby near Liverpool, UK, has been a vegan for 20 years and owns plant-based food manufacturing and distribution business, Bravura Foods, which she has run for many years whilst, at the same time, training across the disciplines of running, cycling, strength and conditioning.
She actively promotes her vegan lifestyle on her running kit and has recently upped her promotion of the plant-based lifestyle with the publication of a set of cards called The Vegan Deck.
“Lisa is a real role model for those athletes and sports enthusiasts considering a plant-based diet,” Jasmijn de Boo, Vice President of ProVeg International, said.
“She shows that not only can you be fit and healthy eating plant-based food, you can be a world champion too!”
Lisa added: “I am all about spreading the beneficial effects in sport and overall athletic performance associated with plant-based diets. This is a nice extra for me as I have always been vegan for animal welfare reasons.”
