On today’s Earth Day 2023, ProVeg sent a joint statement letter to the presidency of this year’s UN climate change conference, COP28, which takes place in Dubai in December. Launched in partnership with YOUNGO, a leading global youth-led climate group, and the Food@COP Campaign, the letter urges the presidency to ensure that catering at the conference is truly sustainable and, as such, predominantly plant-based. The letter has been endorsed by over 140 civil society organizations from around the world.
In concrete terms, we encourage the COP28 presidency to ensure that:
- At least three quarters of all food options on the menu are plant-based.
- All food options – especially plant-based items – are affordable, nutritious, regionally sourced (where feasible), and culturally inclusive.
- A clear emissions label is displayed for all food options, as implemented at COP26.
UN CLIMATE NEGOTIATIONS
ProVeg International has submitted recommendations this month to a specialist UN negotiation focused on climate change with respect to food and agriculture.
“The UAE has a unique opportunity to set another milestone and become the first presidency to make catering at COP truly sustainable and predominantly plant-based.”
