The Power of Beans and Legumes

Beans and legumes have been a dietary staple for centuries, offering a rich source of protein, vitamins, minerals, micronutrients, and dietary fibre. Long cherished by various cultures around the world for their versatility, affordability, and nutritional value, it’s not surprising that almost all national dietary guidelines recommend the regular consumption of legumes and pulses.

Our current food system faces numerous interconnected crises, including the unsustainable consumption of animal-based protein. Animal farming is a leading contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, deforestation, and biodiversity loss, and also results in significant health risks due to the overuse of antibiotics and the consumption of high-fat animal products, some of which are potential carcinogens. Legumes can play an important role in replacing animal products as a tasty, healthy and sustainable protein source.

Beans for the win!

At ProVeg we have an insatiable appetite for a better world. In a world that’s craving tasty change on our plates, ProVeg is on a mission to transform the global food system. To achieve this ambitious goal, ProVeg has kickstarted many impactful initiatives, including the ProVeg Incubator, the world’s leading Incubator of plant-based, fermentation, and cultivated-food startups, The Veggie Challenge app, which makes it easier than ever to try a more plant-based diet, and the New Food Hub, a guide to increasing plant-based revenue packed with concise expert advice and market research.

ProVeg recognises the important role that beans and legumes have to play in transforming our food system. Through education, advocacy, and collaboration with governments, businesses, and individuals, we promote the adoption of plant-based diets. Which, in nearly all cultures, means more beans!

Which brings us to Beans is How – an ambitious campaign that aims to double the global consumption of beans, peas, lentils and other pulses by 2028. This sounds like a perfect match for ProVeg’s mission of transforming the global food system by replacing 50% of animal products globally with plant-based and cultivated foods by 2040.
