Plant-based tuna wins first prize in ProVeg Czechia competition

A tuna-flavoured alternative called Vuna, made by Garden Gourmet, has won first prize in a competition run by ProVeg Czechia to find the country’s most popular meat and dairy alternative products.

The award was presented at this year’s New Food Forum conference, held by ProVeg in the Czech capital of Prague in a popularity contest based on statistics gleaned from ProVeg Czechia’s Instagram account.

Vuna is sold on the Czech market under the name ‘Vuňák’ and is based on pea and wheat protein. It contains almost 23g of protein per 100g as well as omega-3 fatty acids, and carries a vegan V-Label certificate.

“I am very happy that ProVeg followers chose our product in the popular plant-based meat alternative category,” Garden Gourmet brand manager, Zuzana Charvátová, said.

“We will continue to develop delicious plant-based dishes and contribute to making a positive impact on the environment,” Charvátová added.

Other winners were airy giant Müller, which was awarded first prize in the dairy alternative category for its Vegan Mousse, a coconut-based chocolate mousse with an airy texture and a Belgian chocolate taste.

A vegan Easter bunny produced by Lindt won the confectionary-alternative categories of the competition. For its Vegan Bunny, Lindt uses an oat base to achieve its milky taste. Lindt offers chocolate-filled oat-based eggs with hazelnut cream as part of the company’s Easter limited edition.

The New Food Forum is held annually and brings industry together to discuss product innovations, sustainable diet trends, and general news in the plant-based market.

Partners of the conference are: Upfield, Cibule, Garden Gourmet, Semix, Frujo, V-Label, Ogilvy, Frujo, Limenita, Wunderman Thompson, Pábení, and Vegetus. For more information about the New Food Forum, visit the website here: newfoodforum.cz.
