With a lineup of ready-to-eat favorites, such as rendang and jerky, Meatless Kingdom brings authentic local flavor to plant-based foods using mushroom and soy.
ProVeg: Meatless Kingdom focuses on authentic Indonesian flavors. How do you capture these traditional tastes and textures using mushroom and soy, ensuring an authentic experience for consumers?
Meatless Kingdom: For jerky, we have a strong R&D team that can develop the authentic taste of Indonesian cuisine. And for rendang, we collaborate with a well-respected company that has more than 30 years’ experience in selling beef rendang. So, when we replace it with vegan beef that has the same texture of meat, we already know that this taste is proven.
PV: Given your focus on ready-to-eat favorites, what opportunities do you see for your products in bringing plant-based options to a broader, more traditional consumer base in Indonesia and beyond?
MK: Our products can cover the smell of soy beans because they contain a rich blend of spices. They bring a new experience for customers who want to taste authentic Indonesian food. And the most interesting thing is that rendang is well known as one of the most delicious foods in the world, based on CNN International, so this branding can trigger consumers outside of Indonesia who want to try.
PV: What is the biggest impact you hope Meatless Kingdom will have on the future of food?
MK: Democratizing plant-based eating by offering affordable, delicious, and culturally diverse options to bridge the gap between ‘ethical eating’ and mainstream appeal, especially in markets like Indonesia where meat-heavy diets dominate. We want to partner with street vendors, restaurants, and schools to normalize accessibility and prove that plant-based meat is tasty and savory. We also want to position Indonesia as a hub for sustainable food innovation, and invest in R&D for hyper-local ingredients, such as fermented tempeh and coro beans, while collaborating with farmers to transition to climate-resilient crops.
