Your guide to eating plant-based at summer festivals

Summer has finally arrived in the northern hemisphere, and with it, the vibrant energy of festivals! It’s exciting to see major events such as Primavera Sound and Tomorrowland increasingly embracing plant-based menus and food trucks, not only to cater to diverse tastes but also to promote a more sustainable approach to waste and environmental impact. Even with these positive shifts, packing your own food and drink will ensure you stay hydrated and energised without feeling hungry – and it’s usually cheaper. This guide will help you fuel your body and mind for optimal fun!

Festival food essentials: what to pack

While there are no universal guidelines, most festivals publish a list of what food and drinks can be brought in. Our recommendations focus on non-perishable items that won’t weigh you down, leaving you free to dance and enjoy every moment!

Water

First and foremost: pack a bottle of water! Most festivals allow you to bring a water bottle; if not pre-filled, they usually offer free water stations or taps for refills. Staying hydrated is crucial, especially in the summer heat and when you’re expending a lot of energy.

Electrolytes

Electrolytes aren’t just for sports drinks! Consider packing coconut water or fruits such as  bananas and oranges. These are not only excellent natural sources of electrolytes but also contain less sodium than many commercial beverages. You can even add a pinch of salt to your water to replenish sodium lost through sweat.

Stay cool: plant-based hydration tips for every workout

Staying hydrated isn’t just about avoiding thirst – it’s about giving your body the tools it needs to recover and perform at its best. While plain water is a great starting point, it’s not always enough for optimal hydration during longer or more intense workouts. This article provides tips on how to keep yourself hydrated.

Nuts

An effortless choice for sharing and a quick protein boost between sets. Walnuts, peanuts, almonds, pistachios … pick your favourite!

Dried fruits

If space is limited or you’re concerned about freshness, dried fruits are a great option. From mangoes and coconuts to bananas and apples, there’s a dried fruit for every taste. Plus, they store perfectly in a zip-lock bag without making a mess.

Baby carrots and other veggies

Pack a bag of baby carrots for a satisfying crunch. They’re an excellent source of Vitamin A (in the form of beta-carotene), Vitamin K, and potassium. Other raw veggies such as celery, cucumber, and bell peppers also make delicious snacks. If you have room, bring a small container of hummus for dipping!

Protein bars

Easy to carry and excellent for refuelling, they come in a range of flavours. Just avoid chocolate-covered options, as they’re prone to melting in the sun.

Sandwiches and wraps

The possibilities are endless! Think falafel wraps with salad, plant-based tuna sandwiches, or a classic vegan cheese with deli slices. Just be sure to enjoy them early in the day if they contain ingredients that need to stay cool, and avoid sauces or creams that might spoil in the heat.

10 easy packed lunch ideas

If you’re tired of the same old lunch routine, why not spice up your midday meal with these delicious and easy-to-make plant-based packed lunch ideas. Perfect for work, home, or a picnic, these options are sure to impress!

Tomorrowland (Boom, Belgium)
One of the world’s largest electronic music festivals, held over two weekends (18th to the 20th of July, and 25th to the 27th of July), Tomorrowland is committed to sustainability and offers multiple vegan stalls. They’ve even partnered with Alpro in the past for dedicated vegan breakfast areas.

Outside Lands (San Francisco, USA)

Taking place in mid-August (8th to the 10th of August), this festival emphasises food, with unique plant-based offerings from the Bay Area. Expect everything from Filipino sandwiches and coffee specialties to pizzas, Indonesian rice bowls, and Nepalese dumplings at the ‘Taste of Bay Area’ food court. The festival’s multi-genre line-up draws a diverse crowd, making it perfect for all music tastes.

Sziget Festival (Budapest, Hungary)

Held from the 6th to the 11th of August in Budapest, Sziget features a wide range of genres, including rock, indie, pop, and electronic. This year, they are committed to sustainable catering, reducing animal-based meat in favour of more vegan and vegetarian options. Other initiatives include a composting lab, recycling zones, and free bike storage.

Shambala (Northamptonshire, UK)

If you love dance workshops, yoga, music, poetry, and art, Shambala is for you! Its music spans electronic beats, live bands, soul, reggae, hip hop, punk, and folk. Best of all? The audience voted for Shambala to be meat- and fish-free, making it an excellent choice for vegetarians and vegans! The festival takes place this year from the 21st to the 24th of August.

Highfield (Leipzig, Germany)

This indie-rock festival offers camping next to a beautiful lake. Highfield is dedicated to sustainability, providing vegan and vegetarian options, and even a food-sharing stall to minimise waste. This year, the festival will take place between the 15th and the 17th of August.

Featuring international musicians and well-known Brazilian artists, the festival is committed to neutralising 100% of carbon emissions through sustainable transport, efficient waste management, and even has a vegetarian food court.

Øyafestivalen (Oslo, Norway)

Known for being one of the most sustainable festivals in the world, Øyafestivalen takes place from the 6th to the 9th of August. Expect a mix of famous pop artists and local Norwegian musicians. In 2013, Debio awarded the festival a gold label for organic food service for offering more than 90% of organic ingredients. Beyond its ecological responsibility, you’ll find a wide range of delicious vegan food to enjoy!

Enjoy your plant-based summer!

Remember to stay hydrated, opt for non-perishable items when packing, and always check each festival’s guidelines on what you can bring. Don’t forget your sunscreen, and, most importantly, enjoy your summer festival experience!
