New ProVeg guide supports health professionals in helping patients maintain nutritional quality during GLP-1 therapy

New evidence-informed brochure highlights how plant-forward nutrition can support dietary quality, nutritional adequacy, and long-term health outcomes alongside medication

As GLP-1 therapies continue to reshape conversations around obesity treatment and dietary behavior, ProVeg International has launched a new professional nutrition resource designed to help healthcare practitioners support patients beyond medication alone.

The new brochure, Better Results, Starting Now: Your Nutrition Roadmap for GLP-1 Therapy, translates emerging nutrition evidence into practical dietary considerations for health professionals supporting people using GLP-1 therapies.

GLP-1 therapy changes appetite, not nutritional needs

The launch comes amid growing recognition that while GLP-1 therapies can support appetite regulation and weight management, reduced food intake increases the importance of dietary quality and nutritional adequacy.

Currently, there is a gap between clinical treatment and everyday dietary solutions.

“GLP-1 therapy changes appetite, but not nutritional needs,” said Anna-Lena Klapp, Head of Research at ProVeg International and one of the lead authors of the brochure.

“When people eat less, every meal matters more. Health professionals increasingly need practical, evidence-informed resources that help patients maintain nutritional quality while building sustainable eating habits alongside treatment.”

Developed by a multidisciplinary team including nutrition, public health, and food technology experts, the brochure explores practical approaches to supporting nutritional adequacy during GLP-1 therapy through a focus on dietary quality, nutrient density, symptom management, and long-term behavior change.

Practical nutrition guidance for long-term outcomes

A plant-forward framework aligns well with changing eating patterns during GLP-1 therapy, where some patients may prefer lighter, smaller and more nutrient-dense meals. High-fiber, nutrient-dense whole plants can help support gut health, stabilize blood sugar, maximize satiety, and contribute to overall dietary quality.

As food intake declines, maintaining adequate protein and fiber intake becomes increasingly important. Plant-forward dietary approaches can help address both priorities by contributing protein alongside naturally fiber-rich foods, protecting muscle mass and optimizing patient outcomes.

The brochure translates these principles into practical dietary considerations for healthcare professionals, including:

  • Supporting sufficient protein intake to help preserve muscle mass during weight loss
  • Prioritizing nutrient-dense foods when portion sizes become smaller
  • Managing gastrointestinal side effects through practical dietary approaches
  • Supporting hydration and fiber intake to maintain digestive comfort
  • Encouraging physical activity and long-term eating habits alongside medication

The brochure emphasizes that medication and nutrition should be viewed as complementary approaches rather than competing interventions.

“Long-term outcomes depend on more than appetite suppression alone,” said Klapp. “Nutrition and lifestyle remain essential components of patient support. We aim to contribute practical guidance that helps translate emerging evidence into everyday conversations between healthcare professionals and patients.”

The publication is intended to support, not replace, professional medical and nutritional advice and encourages healthcare professionals to tailor recommendations to individual patient needs.

Supporting healthcare professionals with evidence-informed tools

The brochure forms part of ProVeg International’s broader work exploring the intersection of nutrition, public health, and emerging food-system trends, with a focus on making plant-forward approaches practical, accessible, and evidence-informed.
